Did I just write the other day about trying to eat more healthfully? Pretend for the next few minutes that you didn’t read that post. I refuse to apologize for my life-long love of burgers, fries, and Doritos. (<–That was foreshadowing. Look at me being all literary.)

I had never heard of Fat Boy’s Roadside Eats until last month when Chattanooga Eats was doing their burger poll. They were one of the contenders for the East Brainerd area. I passed Fat Boy’s while on the road for work a week or two later. It was then that I decided to look it up. I was overcome with the need to try them out. Their menu was decidedly decadent, featuring foods that you might expect to find at a fair. I had to go.

Philip and I headed out to Fat Boy’s Roadside Eats at lunch time on a Wednesday. They did not appear to be extremely busy; another couple was ordering when we arrived and a few people came to pick up orders while we were there. The menu is taped to the counter in front of the window; the counter was pretty high so my 5’3″ self had a difficult time reading it. Looking back, I should have asked for a take-out menu. I wish that they had a larger menu or even just one of the takeout menus posted in a more accessible place. We quickly placed our order then took a seat at one of the picnic tables. Our order arrived within 10 or 15 minutes.

The menu at Fat Boy’s Roadside Eats is divided into the following categories: BBQ, loaded baked potatoes, sandwiches and burgers, burritos and bowls, tacos, quesadillas, sides, family meal deals, and “other” which encompasses snack/appetizers type things. I had taken a look at their Facebook page before we went and knew that I wanted to try their cheese stuffed Doritos. Cheese stuffed Doritos are described by the menu as “Cheddar cheese breaded in crushed Doritos and deep fried to perfection, served with a side of ranch”. Sounds like my kind of food. We got a half order (5 pieces) for $3.49. They turned out to be a great, fun treat, especially for some who finds Doritos to be addictively delicious like myself. The concept was similar to a mozzarella stick, except with cheddar and Doritos instead of mozzarella and breadcrumbs. By the way, the menu notes that some items in the “other” category may not be available every day.

Because the cashier was waiting, I felt a little rushed to order. That’s silly and I should have asked for a menu and taken my time. Instead, I jumped to order a cheeseburger ($7.99). All of the burgers and sandwiches are served with fries and fry sauce. The burgers, as noted on the front of the menu, are huge. I could only eat a little more than half of mine.

The cheese was American cheese, which is my burger choice because of its meltability. The buns were pretty standard burger buns, and the burgers were served with lettuce, tomato, onion (which I removed), pickle, mustard, mayo, and ketchup. The meat was cooked very well – a little crispy on the outside – and the burgers were well seasoned and delicious. My only complain was that it was extremely messy. The fries were pretty standard; due to space issues, they use frozen fries-but they were crispy and well seasoned, so I was fine with them. I really liked the fry sauce, a slightly spicy amalgamation of mayonnaise and ketchup.

Philip got the bacon double cheeseburger ($10.99). If my burger was huge, his burger could only be described as gargantuan. He had to cut it in half just to be able to pick it up! He agreed with me, though, that the burger was very good.

Like I said, I wish that I had gotten something besides the burger. That definitely isn’t because I didn’t like the burger, but there are so many things on the menu that I wish I had tried something else, especially since Philip had a burger as well. I plan to visit Fat Boy’s Roadside Eats again in the near future so that we can try something different and give a more comprehensive opinion on the food that they offer!

The back of the menu gives a little insight into why the family decided to start their business in the Standifer Gap area. It’s a small, family-owned place in an area without a lot of food options, so I hope that they continue to get the support that they need to continue serving fun food to the East Brainerd area. Our total, pre-tip, was $24.55, which, at first glance, seemed a little pricey to me. However, when I considered what I would pay for the same meal in a casual dining restaurant or from a more traditional food truck, as well as the sheer quantity of food that we were given, I realized that the price really wasn’t particularly steep.

Support a family-owned business and give Fat Boy’s Roadside Eats a try!

Southern Burger Co.

June 8, 2016

Southern Burger Co. has been through a few incarnations-a truck, then a spot in Warehouse Row, & now a restaurant in Ooltewah. They're a Chattavore top ten! | review from Chattavore.com

Southern Burger Co. has been through a few incarnations-a truck, then a spot in Warehouse Row, & now a restaurant in Ooltewah. They’re a Chattavore top ten!

Southern Burger Co. has long since moved from Warehouse Row, being replaced fairly recently by Two Ten Jack (which I plan to visit soon). They’ve closed up shop on their truck too, which I hate even though admittedly I never even ordered anything from their truck (food trucks are just too hard to keep track of around here, and I hate crowds, thus preventing me from making too many visits to the communal food truck gatherings).

We’ve actually visited the Cambridge Square (Ooltewah) location of Southern Burger Co. several times, including a visit when I was prepping to write my Top Ten Burgers list, on which Southern Burger was #9 with an overall burger score of 4/5. They were also on my original Top Five list at #4. I just haven’t taken the time to write an updated post…something I’m going to start working on for lots of restaurants I’ve reviewed over the last five (!!!) years.

The place was pretty crowded when we got there around 1:00 on a Wednesday afternoon, but we elected to sit outside because it wasn’t too hot and was even a little breezy. Plus, lighting. Our server, Jonathan, was with us very quickly to take our drink order and brought Philip some beer samples while he looked over the list. He ended up ordering an Oskar Blues Beerito Mexican Lager, which he’s had before (have I mentioned that Philip is now working at Sigler’s Craft Beer? It’s his favorite job ever.).

I usually just order the Southern Burger, which is a very basic burger, with American cheese and some bacon jam added. I decided to instead go with the Raleigh burger this time; how can you argue with pimento cheese, a fried egg, and a fried green tomato on a burger? I ordered the regular fries, which are skin-on house cut fries. You guys know I can’t resist. They were actually out of tots and onion rings (they have changed their onion rings since our original visit, when they were handmade…I loved them but I think a lot of people prefer the more uniform coating of frozen onion rings. ? BTW, they no longer serve the house-made ketchup automatically with the fries, though it is available upon request. They do put it on the burgers that are topped with ketchup. I guess it was just a little too different; they have Heinz on the tables now.). The burger was great – the pimento cheese was clearly house-made with big but not intrusive chunks of pimento as well as some sliced green onions. The coating on the fried green tomato was cornmeal based and just a little spicy, and the tomato was fried till nice and tender. I would have liked my egg a little runny (the yolk was pretty well done) but I guess that would have gotten a little messy. They no longer use Bread Basket rolls, opting now instead for Niedlov’s buns, which are delicious…but I did like that the Bread Basket rolls set them apart a little bit. Oh well.

Philip contemplated the chorizo burger but decided instead for the Bison burger, with grain-finished American bison, Boursin cheese, tomato and onion jam, and topped with an onion ring (when they aren’t out of them). Bison burgers can be a little dry if not done well, but this one was not dry at all. The Boursin cheese added a great creamy element and the tomato and onion jam cut through the richness of the burger and the cheese with a slightly acidic hit. Philip decided to get the waffle-cut sweet potato fries, which are sprinkled with sugar and served with soft cinnamon butter. They are absolutely delicious and I will probably order them next time, if I can talk myself out of the regular fries (that’s not likely, actually, but I can pretend – right?).

Our order was $30.97, which included Philip’s beer – pretty much in line with other comparable joints. The service was quick and Jonathan was very friendly. The atmosphere in the patio area was quiet and lovely, though when I stood up my legs looked like the waffle fries from the texture of my chair – oops. I should have sat on the bench and let Philip sit in the chair with his longer shorts. The inside of the restaurant is decorated perfectly for a burger restaurant, though I can’t describe it off the top of my head…sorry.

Just a note – I have read some negative reviews of Southern Burger Co. on Zomato and Yelp, but there are always plenty of people in there when I go in, and I have never experienced bad food or bad service there.

Southern Burger Co. still gets my vote for one of the best burgers in Chattanooga!

Original Post: January 14, 2012

Last summer, my friend Matt from Matt Eats Chatt posted about Southern Burger Co. Truck. I hadn’t heard about it, but Matt proclaimed their burger the best in Chattanooga. Since it was a truck, though, it wasn’t necessarily easy to catch them since they were usually downtown and also not out and about every day. I was dying to try it, though….so, imagine my delight when I saw on Facebook that they were soon to open a location in the food court at Warehouse Row. The new location joins the truck. It opened on January 5, and I couldn’t get there quickly enough!

First of all, let me say that it has been quite a while since I have been on that side of Warehouse Row, and their food court looks amazing! Right now, Southern Burger Co. and Petunia’s Silver Jalapeno are the only eateries that are open there, but it looks modern and beautiful and contemporary and cool, so hopefully some more great places will open up there!

It didn’t take us long to make our decisions about what to order. I went simple, choosing the Southern burger-just a basic burger with American cheese (I subbed in cheddar, though), mayo, grainy mustard, lettuce, tomato, onion, and Wickle’s pickles. I ordered my burger without onions, of course, and added some Tennessee bacon jam to my burger. I ordered a combo with fries. Philip chose the jalapeno burger, which came with cheddar cheese, fresh (not pickled) jalapenos, bacon jam, lettuce, tomato, and mayo. He also got a combo, but he got onion rings (so we could try both, of course). We were a little taken aback when Christian (the “founder”, who rang us up) asked what sauce we wanted with our sides-ranch, ketchup, etc. We both ordered ketchup. It rang up to something around $20-definitely not a “fast food price”-but after I tell you about the food, you’ll understand. This is not fast food, and you can’t get food like this at chain casual dining restaurant, where you’d pay around the same (or more) for a burger and fries that contain ingredients from who-knows-where. I am willing to pay a little more for quality ingredients from a local establishment. Well worth the price.

Like I said, this is not fast food. It took around ten minutes for us to get our orders, and we were fine with that, especially once we got our food. Each of our combos came in its own separate bag:

20120114-175855.jpg

The burgers looked delicious, and so did the hand-cut fries. I think I have probably mentioned that I love hand-cut fries! I had heard read some negative remarks about their fries being greasy on their Facebook page, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Oh, and the ketchup? Homemade. Toto, I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore! It was clear that the ketchup wasn’t bottled; it was a little thinner than normal, and there was a seed in mine, and it was spicy. Yea! It was wonderful…but yes, they did have packets of Hunt’s for you ketchup purists (you know who you are!).  Okay…back to the food. The fries? I loved them! They were (a) hand-cut; (b) perfectly fried-some were crispy and some weren’t. I love that!; and (c) perfectly salted. Philip and I were having a discussion about the negative fry remarks and were speculating that perhaps people’s “fry expectations” were so diluted by fast-food fries that we don’t always recognize truly great fries. Just a theory. Anyway, I was very happy with the fries! And then….there was the burger. Ah, the burger. The bun was obviously handmade-you could tell by looking at it. The burger patty was fairly thin and it was crispy around the edges but slightly pink in the middle. Now, it takes talent to do that! For those of you who are squeamish about pink beef (you know I am not) I am sure you can request that it be well done! The cheese was also slightly crispy around the edges, which I loved! I loved the kick that the grainy mustard added, and the bacon jam was the perfect finish-sweet, delicious smokiness.

20120114-175916.jpg

Philip loved his jalapeno burger as well. As I mentioned before, the jalapenos were fresh, not pickled. They were beautifully green, as green as the lettuce leaves. The cheddar cheese and bacon jam perfectly finished the burger. I tasted it and found it to be spicy but not too much so (I’m a wuss, but I could have eaten the whole thing-I think!). They also have a habanero burger, but Philip is getting over being sick and did not think that his recovering sore throat could hack it this time-maybe next time! The onion rings were obviously handmade-thickly sliced and not coated in a heavy jacket of breading, but just a light crumbly coating. They were not stiffly fried and honestly didn’t look like much-but they were delicious. I can’t even think of a way to describe them!

20120114-175927.jpg

Christian came out to check on us after we had a chance to taste our food. He told me that their buns come from The Bread Basket, which makes me love them even more. Now, there’s another local bakery (which shall remain nameless) that seems to be the “trendy” place to get your bread from. Not that there’s anything wrong with that-they make great products, and they’re still a local business-but I love that Southern Burger Co. is doing something a little unexpected. Their bacon comes from Benton farm, and Christian even told me the secrets to their bacon jam-but I am sworn to secrecy! Before we left, Philip proclaimed his burger the best he’d ever had. I’m inclined to agree. It was amazing. Their slogan is “Don’t just kind of take a bite.” If you try it, you won’t be able to just kind of take a bite. Go check out Southern Burger Co.!

Merv’s Burgers Soddy-Daisy

April 20, 2016

Merv's Burgers recently opened a new location in Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee. The burgers definitely lived up to the expectations set by the original location! | restaurant review from Chattavore.com

Merv’s Burgers recently opened a new location in Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee. The burgers definitely lived up to the expectations set by the original location!

If you’ve lived in Chattanooga for a while now, chances are that you have heard of Merv’s Burgers on Mountain Creek Road. They claim to have the best burgers in Tennessee and a lot of people contend that they have the best burgers in Chattanooga. While you probably know who tops my burger list, Merv’s is on there with their classic burgers. So when it got out that Merv’s was opening in Soddy-Daisy, just about ten minutes from my house, I was pretty excited.

The new Merv’s location opened in February in a location that, unfortunately, has seen a lot of turnover in the past several years. It was a classic meat and three, Ronnie’s Restaurant, for years and years before Ronnie decided to hang up his hat and move on. Since then it’s been two different Mexican restaurants, an Italian restaurant, and a couple of other things. The location seems cursed, which is odd because Home Folks across the street has been there since I was a kid. We decided to go and check it out for lunch with my brother on his birthday.

They’ve done a lot of work inside. It’s been painted and metal panels have been installed on the walls, which is a nod to the Mountain Creek Road location. There’s a dining space and a pool hall space. They have a “seat yourself” sign, which I appreciate because you guys know I can’t stand when I walk in to a restaurant and I’m not sure if I should seat myself or wait to be seated. Our server, Shana, approached us immediately to get our drink orders while we perused the menu (we all went with water).

The menu at Merv’s Burgers is pretty basic: appetizers, salads and wraps, burgers and sandwiches, sides, and entrees. Philip’s eyes lit on the pork rinds on the appetizer menu, and at $2.99 it seems like we couldn’t possibly pass up freshly made pork rinds. For those of you who don’t know, yes, pork rinds are pieces of fried pig skin. These were fresh out of the fryer when they came to our table, still crackling and popping like crazy. They tasted like porky salted air. I honestly have never been much of a pork rind fan, but then I’ve never had them freshly made. These were delicious.
Merv's Soddy Daisy
We all three decided to go with burgers – no big surprise there. I’d like to know how many meals a day that Merv’s serves that are not burgers. I had a L’il Merv with American cheese and no onion, Philip had the L’il Merv with cheddar and bacon, and my brother went for the gusto with a regular Merv burger with American cheese, grilled onions, and bacon. Here’s the thing about a Merv’s burger…they’re so simple that it almost seems too simple. There’s no fancy bun, no special sauce, no out-of-the-ordinary toppings, no swanky meat. And it’s it that simplicity that the Merv’s burger shines. With their irregular shape, they’re obviously hand-patted, cooked up just to doneness on the flat-top, cheese melted on top, and toppings judiciously done (i.e. the condiments and toppings don’t slip and slide all over the place).

We split a large order of fries ($4.99) and the basket was more than big enough for the three of us. Merv’s seems like the kind of place where the fries would be an afterthought, just a necessary but neglected menu item, something that goes beside the burger. That’s not the case, though…the fries are hand-cut, skin-on, and perfectly cooked and seasoned. I have a love affair with hand-cut fries, for those of you who don’t know.

I read some reviews on the Facebook page, and some of them were a little negative, not so much about the food but about the service. However, those reviews were all posted within the first couple of weeks that this location was open, so I have to guess that they were probably really busy and they were probably just getting their sea legs. Our food came out very quickly and Shana was very attentive.

To cap it all off, the three of us ate burgers, fries, and pork rinds (we drank water) for $29.31 pre-tip. That’s three adults eating in a non-fast food restaurant for under $30, and that’s not bad. There was a steady flow of diners coming in to eat lunch, with others coming in to shoot pool. I don’t drive that way often, but I’m guessing that they’re doing a pretty good business at night too. I guess it’s too early to tell, but I’m thinking that Merv’s might break the curse of that location.

Merv’s Burgers is located at 8968 Dayton Pike, Soddy Daisy, TN 37379. They are open Monday-Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. They do not have a website, but you can follow Merv’s Burgers on Facebook.

Steamboat Sandwiches (Shallowford)

April 6, 2016

Steamboat Sandwiches on Shallowford Road in Chattanooga, Tennessee is a great place to get excellent sandwiches at amazing prices during the workday! | review from Chattavore.com

Steamboat Sandwiches on Shallowford Road in Chattanooga, Tennessee is a great place to get excellent sandwiches at amazing prices during the workday!

As I type this, I am already lamenting the fact that my spring break is nearly over. As you read this, I will already be back to work, no longer able to pull off the whole “full-time blogger” charade. I’m not complaining, just stating facts. One of the nice things about breaks, though, is the fact that it gives me the opportunity to eat at restaurants that are usually closed when I’m not at work. I don’t get many opportunities to eat at restaurants during my workdays; I’m lucky to have time to eat lunch at all. Itinerant staff problems.

I asked my Facebook friends for some suggestions of places that are not open on nights and weekends. I got several suggestions, some of which I’d already tried…then the winner. One friend suggested that we try Steamboat. A friend from work had recently had a Steamboat sandwich in the office and was gushing about how good their house-made bread and egg salad were. I made a mental note that I needed to eat there at some point and moved on, unsure of whether Steamboat still had a location on Shallowford Road or if I would have to go downtown and deal with paid parking in order to check it out.

Good news: the Shallowford Road location of Steamboat Sandwiches is indeed still open, hence plenty of free parking. It was around 1:00 when we arrived and, while I wouldn’t say it was crowded, there was still a steady stream of folks coming in to get their sandwich fix. The whole operation is unbelievably efficient. They have a small menu – 13 sandwiches (or build your own), a handful of sides, brownies, and cookies. You step up, tell the man at the counter what you want, he circles it with a dry erase marker on a laminated card, and he sticks it up for the lady who makes the sandwiches to see. Our sandwiches were ready before we finished getting our drinks. That, my friends, is what we call speedy service.

I decided that I needed to try the pimento cheese, as I’ve kind of made it my mission in life to try pimento cheese pretty much anywhere that I can find it homemade. I stayed simple, with just lettuce and tomato (no condiments or additional toppings), since I think that pimento cheese really does stand on its own. Too much more makes for a pretty goopy sandwich. I have to say, I was quite impressed. The pimento cheese was very simple – just shredded cheddar, pimentos, and mayonnaise – but delicious in its simplicity. It worked so well with the amazing bread,  which is fresh-baked daily and so gloriously soft. It’s perfect for squishy fillings but not so soft that you feel like you’re eating dough (a common complaint that Philip has about a lot of white breads). The lettuce is shredded, which really does make for an easier sandwich-eating experience, since you don’t have to worry about pulling the entire leaf off of your sandwich. I got the combo, which includes chips and a drink. They had Salt and Vinegar Lay’s, so I was happy. They also have orange-flavored sweet tea, which does not taste like it has orange juice in it but rather orange Kool-aid or Tang or some other orange flavoring agent…and we loved it. I noticed that on Tuesdays and Thursdays you get a free brownie or cookie with your combo, so I was kind of sad that we didn’t wait until Thursday to go!

Philip decided to order the specialty, the Steamboat sandwich. The Steamboat includes smoked ham, Genoa salami, pork roast, Swiss cheese, special sauce, mayo, mustard, lettuce, and pickles. We heard several people ordering the Steamboat as they came in, so it’s obviously pretty popular. I tasted it and it was a great combination of flavors…I mean, how can you really go wrong with three variations of pork on the same sandwich? Philip really liked the special sauce and was trying to figure out what it was as he worked his way through the sandwich, ultimately deciding that he thought it tasted like Buffalo sauce. Like me, he thought the bread was excellent and that it definitely gave the sandwich an edge.

After we left, I decided to put a photo that I had taken on Instagram. I looked up Steamboat Sandwiches and realized that there was a location in Knoxville. As I read the website, I realized that it’s a small chain/franchise operation. Just FYI, that still fits into Chattavore guidelines…as long as it’s a small operation I’m good with it, particularly considering that it’s regional. Because of the hours, it’s unlikely that I’ll be going to Steamboat very often, but at $13 for two sandwich combos, this place has great prices on excellent food and it’s worth a visit when you have time.

Steamboat Sandwiches is located at 5950-C Shallowford Road (at Polymer Drive). They are open 10:30-3:00 Monday-Friday. You can call them at 423-499-6355. There is another location (I am not sure if they are owned by the same franchisee) downtown at 812 Broad Street. They are open 10:30-2:00 Monday-Friday and can be reached at 423-756-8388.

2 Crazy Greeks

February 5, 2016

2 Crazy Greeks is bringing delicious and casual Greek dining to Hixson, Tennessee! | Restaurant review on Chattavore.com

2 Crazy Greeks is bringing delicious and casual Greek dining to Hixson!

As we were driving home from our “meh” Chinese dining experience the weekend before last, we drove past 2 Crazy Greeks on Hixson Pike (next to Krystal) and I was all, “Dang! We should have gone there!” I’ve been craving Mediterranean food ravenously for the last couple of weeks for whatever reason. Suddenly, I knew that I had to have Greek food ASAP.

I rarely get office hours in my job but one day last week I had a few glorious hours to work on a PowerPoint for a presentation that I needed to do. Since I was going to be in Hixson, I asked Philip to come eat lunch with me at my office. We never get to eat lunch together, so that was a nice change of pace…and it was also nice to eat lunch at my desk rather than in my car.

Philip called in our order to 2 Crazy Greeks and I stopped by and picked it up. They told him that it would take ten minutes, which was definitely quicker than I expected…but we ordered right when they opened. It’s good to be on the ball. Now…in case you didn’t know, 2 Crazy Greeks is a food stand, not a restaurant…i.e. there’s no seating. There was a lady there placing an order when I arrived but they took my name and quickly got my order for me. The lady who waited on me was very friendly…I paid, took my order, and got to the office.

I like that the menu is small…I always think that when menus are kept small that restaurants can focus on the few items on the menu. I decided on the falafel. In case you aren’t familiar with falafel, it’s fried patties made from chickpeas and herbs. They are served on a pita with lettuce, tomato, and onion (which I promptly removed, of course) and tzatziki sauce, which is a sauce made with yogurt, cucumber, garlic, and dill. The sandwich was nice and warm and the falafel patties were very hot, a perfect foil for the cool vegetables and the tzatziki. Guys, this sandwich was amazing…very flavorful. The only thing that I would have changed (besides ordering it without onions next time) would be to have the tzatziki on the side so I could put it on myself and make it a little less messy to eat.

Philip decided to get the gyro. The traditional beef and lamb gyro is made with ground beef and ground lamb mixed with herbs and spices, spit-roasted, and shaved. Like my falafel, it was also served with lettuce, tomato, onion, and tzatziki on a pita. The meat was tender and delicious, very well-seasoned…and there was a huge portion of meat on the sandwich. In fact, Philip wasn’t able to finish it because it was so large (don’t worry…I finished mine). He did say that he thought it probably could have used a little less tzatziki…but I think again that serving it on the side would fix the problem, which was basically that all the tzatziki was at the top of the sandwich so it made it very messy to eat.

We split an order of feta fries. They were hand-cut fries with herbed feta cheese (oregano was a very prominent flavor in the cheese) and drizzled with olive oil. As is typical with hand-cut fries, they weren’t super-crispy…and that’s okay with me. I love hand-cut fries and everything about them. They were salted perfectly and, despite the olive oil drizzle, not greasy. Because of the feta cheese, these fries were best eaten with a fork.

One thing that I read in one of the reviews on Facebook or Yelp was that it was pricy for the amount of food that you get. My falafel ($6), Philip’s gyro ($6.75), and the feta fries ($4.75) cost a total of $19.12 including tax. I felt that the portions were very generous, certainly plenty for us, and I didn’t think it was pricy at all considering the quality and flavor of the food. I wouldn’t bat an eye at paying that at a full-service restaurant. I thought it was worth it! If you’re a fan of Greek food, you definitely need to check out 2 Crazy Greeks!
